Canal Road Walk and Roll

Celebrate a car-free day on the D&R Canal!

Canal Road Walk & Roll happens Sunday, August 31, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM, with Canal Road closed to traffic from Griggstown Causeway to Route 518 (Rocky Hill).

Bring your bike, skates, stroller, wheelchair, or walking shoes and enjoy a safe, scenic stretch of the canal with friends and family—no cars, just fresh air and towpath views.

Visit Waterloo Village

In Waterloo Village on Saturdays from June 21st to Oct. 25th 10am to 4pm The Canal Society Museum, the Highlands Canal Boat Exhibit (White Barn), and Gristmill are open. There are Canal Society of NJ docents to provide a historical tour of the exhibits of the Morris Canal and The Delaware and Raritan Canal. In the museum, there are numerous artifacts and exhibits on both canals which traversed New Jersey. The Highlands Canal Boat Exhibit contains a preserved 10-foot bow section of a Morris Canal boat and other boat artifacts and exhibits.

Olde Suckasunny Day

What: A much needed outdoor street fair with fun, food, games, performances, opportunities to support local businesses and nonprofits, and a massive book sale!

Canal House Challenge

Discover New Jersey’s canal heritage in one big day: the Canal House Challenge returns on Sunday, September 14, 2025, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM.

All five historic homes along the Delaware & Raritan Canal open their doors—learn the stories at each stop, get inspired to explore the towpath, and earn a small prize if you visit them all.

The event is free (donations support ongoing preservation) and sponsored by the D&R Canal Watch. Perfect for history lovers, families, and curious day-trippers.

September Program Meeting

Join us for the Canal Society of New Jersey’s Program Meeting, a free, public evening talk featuring a guest speaker with vivid images and stories from the Morris Canal, the D&R Canal, and current restoration work. It’s relaxed, informative, and built for everyone—first-timers and long-time canal fans alike.

Expect a fast, visual presentation with time for Q&A. Bring a friend, learn something real, and connect with people who care about New Jersey’s canal heritage.

Lock 2 East - The Pathways of History

Step back into New Jersey’s canal era at Lock 2 East in Wharton this October during the Pathways of History tour. Stroll a restored, watered stretch of the Morris Canal at Hugh Force Park, step inside the lock tender’s house, and see the only working canal lock on the 102-mile route in action.

Friendly guides share quick demos and stories about how boats were lifted and lowered in old Port Oram (now Wharton). It’s free, family-friendly, and perfect for a crisp fall outing—drop in and explore.

Tour De Towpath

Pedal, run, or stroll the Tour de Towpath in Trenton on Saturday, October 25, 2025.

Pick your pace: a 50-mile ride to Colonial Park with three oasis stops, a 20-mile ride to Turning Basin Park with one oasis, a half marathon to Washington Crossing State Park, or a friendly 5K—all starting at 10:00 AM from 36 Parkside Ave., Trenton.

Registration is $50 (online closes Oct 24), and volunteers are welcome (8:00 AM report time) to help on the course and at the start/finish festival.

Seneca Chief at Pier 26, New York

Welcome the Erie Canal bicentennial to NYC as the replica canal boat Seneca Chief completes its month-long voyage and arrives at Pier 26 (Hudson River Park) on Sunday, October 26, 2025.

Built by the Buffalo Maritime Center and retracing Governor DeWitt Clinton’s 1825 journey from Buffalo to New York Harbor, this waterfront finale features the official Bicentennial Commemoration in New York City. Times and program details will be announced closer to the date.

Bike Ride on the Feeder Canal

Join D&R Canal Watch for a guided Bike Ride on the Feeder Canal on Sunday, November 2, 2025, 10:00 AM–5:00 PM.

It’s a round-trip ride along the scenic Feeder Canal towpath—helmets required.
